Wang Yanan is a senior Kinnara dancer and cultural inheritor in Yunnan. Behind every performance are years of practice that most audiences never see. She showed me how costumes are repaired by hand, how masks are painted and repainted, and how movements are taught patiently to the next generation. She did not describe herself as preserving a tradition—she described showing up, again and again, to a practice that asked something of her body and her time.
